Provincetown, Mass. Oct. 1st 1919. My dear Madden: I'm glad to learn by your letter received this afternoon that you approve of my stand regarding "Beyond". I think it's more than time that Williams came across with a man's size proposition or else threw down his hand. A year and a half of bluff is quite enough. I wrote Tyler day before yesterday about "The Straw". I put it to him strong, saying that the play is the best thing I have done, etc. and asking him to find time for an immediate reading as soon as you sent him a script. I believe if he possibly can he will do this. Why not send him the second script without waiting for the Selwyn decision -- in case you haven't yet heard from them when you receive this. It will do no harm to have as many irons in the fire as possible. Of the two firms, I decidedly prefer Tyler. One thing I can bank on with him -- a square deal! He has know me all my life and I am confident he feels more than a purely business interest in my work and future. With very kindest regards, Very sincerely yours, Eugene O'Neill. |
