Provincetown, Mass. Oct. 4, 1919. My dear Madden: The letter you enclose from John D. is very eloquent and well written and I have no doubt he means most of what he says; but, as you state, he is careful not to mention the most important thing -- the guarantee of a New York production. I would strongly suggest that in order to bind that guarantee -- should he consent to giving one -- you get from him an agreement by which he shall deduct nothing from my royalties in payment of the advances made me until after the play opens in New York. This proposal adheres to the terms of the contract and, if he is willing to guarantee N.Y. production, I don't see how he can object to it. I am glad to hear "The Straw" is now in Tyler's hands and hope he will give the quick decision on it he promised me. The scripts of "Chris" and the missing scene both arrived today. Many thanks! I'll take the liberty to keep Williams letter with me for further digestion until tomorrow or Monday when I will not fail to send it back to you. With very kindest regards, Very sincerely yours, Eugene O'Neill. |
