To Richard Madden

Provincetown, Mass.

My dear Madden:

Not having had any word from you, I conclude Williams is keeping up the old stalling game.  If you have had nothing definite from him by the time you receive this, I think you ought to force him to a showdown.  He cannot in reason postpone a decision any longer.  If "Beyond" is to open within the contract time rehearsals will have to start almost immediately.  Failure to start them can only mean one thing -- that he does not intend to keep his word.  In which case, the play will be free to all intents and purposes and I will send you my copy so that it may be submitted elsewhere without loss of time.

I have written to Tyler to try and hurry up his decision on "The Straw".

With very best regards,

Very sincerely yours,

Eugene O'Neill.
