Dear Mr. Ervine:

The enclosed letter is one I wrote in answer to your kind note of appreciation of my "Beyond The Horizon". As you will see, it has been bandied about considerably, held up by hotel and post office, and it never was finally returned to me at my house here until last week. My mistake was in taking it for granted that you were stopping at the Commodore Hotel because you wrote on that paper. It is also a deplorable instance, however, of the present slackness of our postal service that it should have taken them nearly two months to get my letter back to me.

I owe the favor of your London address to Mr. Barrett H. Clark. I was determined my letter should reach you in the end; for I do not wish you to think that I could be so discourtiously ungrateful as not to write you my appreciation of your kindness.

"Jane Clegg" is a fine big play, a rare and a true one, and I am as delighted over its success as if it were my own. Taking everything into consideration -- play, acting, directing, etc -- I am firmly convinced the production of "Jane Clegg" marks high water for the American theatre. I Know it is the nearest to perfection I have ever seen.
