Nov. 28th 1934.

Dear Mother:

Thank you immensely for the throw-over!  It is a beautiful piece of work and, incidentally, just exactly what I need when I'm working in the window-seat of my study in winter.  It is most kind of you to have thought of this gift -- and I know how long and hard you must have worked on it.  Believe me, I appreciate it, and will appreciate it more and more as time goes on and it becomes the warm, comfortable companion of winter working days -- a  constant reminder of your kindness!

From what Carlotta tells me of your letters I judge you are well on the road to recovery from your illness.  That's grand!  And I am glad to report that I'm emerging from the after-effects of my near nervous breakdown last April.  So mutual congratulations are in order, I think.  We'll show 'em all yet that we're still there with the old pep, won't we?

Tell Cyn that I feel a guilty dog for not having written in so long.  It is not from lack of thought of her, or lack of gratitude for her thought of me, but simply that, at best, I am a perfectly lousy correspondent and since last April I have been, if possible, even lousier!  But I will write to her soon now.  It's grand that she is so happy in her marriage.  If I were her real, instead of just her step-father, I could not be a bit happier at knowing she has found happiness!

Again, deep gratitude for your so-welcome gift -- and, as ever, much love to you!

Gene
