(Letterhead: SAMUEL MERRITT HOSPITAL / OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA) Sunday, Jan. '36 Dear Miss Malmgren: Many thanks for your so beautious, rhymes or in rhymes, poem -- and so gorgeously illustrated, too! And much gratitude for the gifts! I sure like their infinite variety! But don't insinuate this institution resembles the Mannon mansion in "M.B.E."! That is too depressing a thought -- for, as I remember, the male inmates didn't have much luck there, but lost considerably more than their appendixes (if that's the right plural correctly spelled, which I doubt.) Seriously, much gratitude for your appreciation of my plays, and all good luck to you at U.C., and to your ambitions. Eugene O'Neill |
