Dear Dr. Mirlas,

Your second letter to reach me this week arrived to-day.  In reply to your question about a South American trip, there is absolutely no truth in such a report.  I am convalescing from a long illness which kept me in a hospital for two and a half months and I am unable to plan a trip anywhere.

There is no truth either in the report that the Theatre Guild is to produce two of my plays next season.  Owing to illness, I have not been able to do any further work on my cycle of plays since last September.  I have no plays ready for production and, since I must rest and do no work for many months to come, I have no idea when any of the plays will be finally completed.

I am happy to learn that you have finished your book on my work, and that it is to be published under such favourable auspices.  Be sure and send me a copy.  Although I will not be able to read it, I shall treasure it in my library as a mark of your friendship and esteem for my plays, for which I am so grateful to you.

I am sorry but I think there is absolutely no chance for translation of your book to be published in this country.  You see, there are already three different books on my plays published here, and there is no demand for another.  Perhaps, some years from now, after my new cycle of plays is written, published and produced, there may be a chance.  But not now.  I tell you this frankly because I wish to save you from any disappointment in this regard.
