Dr. Leon Mirlas, Dear Mr Mirlas, Your letter of January the 27th arrived a few days ago and I appreciate your kind enquiries about my health. I am happy to say that it has been much improved and that I have been working steadily and making good progress on my Cycle of plays. But it will be at least five years yet before I can hope to finish all of them. How was your book on my work received in Argentine? A friend of mine bought a copy in a book-store in Mexico City. So you see it has penetrated far in Latin America. Unfortunately, here in the United States, little attention is ever paid to books of criticism in Spanish, because few people here can read them. In fact, French is about the only foreign language criticism that ever receives comment, and there is very little of that. I received a letter from the Argentine Authors Society recently asking permission for someone by the name of Massa (I think) to translate "Strange Interlude". Have you heard anything of this? I passed on the request to my agent in New York to answer. All good wishes to you. Very sincerely, Eugene O'Neill March 9th 1939 |
