Dynamo
1928
O'Neill planned a difficult
sound pattern for Dynamo, but little of it is music. He made a
trip to hear a dynamo "humming" at a plant near New York City, and later
was to insist that his designer, Lee Simonson, do the same. The sounds
of the electrical plant were interwoven with the rumble of an
approaching thunderstorm to provide the basis for his exploration of the
god that might be found in electricity. He called for no music except
for a dance record, whereby the girl summons her lover to meet her, to
be played at the end of the first scene. No tune is specified. Any jazz
record from 1928 will suffice.
