After 1888 many New London residents
purchased lots and built small cottages along Ocean Beach. When the
trolley line was extended in 1892, the seaside resort became more
accessible and grew in popularity. O’Neill and his friends spent many
happy days along the Ocean Beach boardwalk, dancing by the bandstand, or
watching fireworks during summer festivities. After the hurricane of
1938 destroyed many private cottages, New London purchased the land and
created the present public beach.
