No serious study of the domestic critical reception of Eugene O'Neill—in fact, very few serious studies of the playwright in any area—can readily function without the assistance of this volume. In it are not only a complete listing of all publication dates of all of O'Neill's plays, but a full account of all productions, including producers, designers, and casts, and lengths of run both of original performances and revivals. There is a comprehensive chronology of O'Neill's life and information about the published sources of the few items he ever wrote besides plays. Most significant of all are the annotated references from the first brief mention of Bound East for Cardiff by Heywood Broun in 1917 to a discussion of the 1973 TV production of Long Day's Journey Into Night, and a complete bibliography of domestic criticism of Eugene O'Neill in book, periodical, and new-paper from Thirst by Clayton Hamilton in 1915 to The Iceman Cometh in Modern Drama of December 1972.—dust jacket |
