Barbara Gelb, dated October 5, 2011, provides insight to their
Charlie Rose interview, as well as a preview of their upcoming new
book.]
Thanks so much for tracking
down two of the interviews we did when we were promoting our second
volume, “Life With Monte Cristo.” It was a special treat to be on
the Charlie Rose show with Zoe and Jason. In the studio, as the show
began, they had no idea Charlie was going to ask them to perform
(nor did we).
But of course they’d both appeared in productions of “Long Day’s
Journey Into Night” and were thoroughly familiar with the roles of
James and Mary Tyrone – and they responded with superb noblesse
oblige. Charlie said the show was one of the most poignant he’d ever
done.
We’re hoping he’ll ask us back next year when our final take on
O’Neill – “By Women Possessed” – will be published by Penguin
Putnam. Sadly, Jason is no longer with us. Zoe, however, says she’ll
be pleased to help us convey the sizzling love affair between
O’Neill and Carlotta Monterey. She’s as fascinated as we are with
the beautiful and all-too-possessive former actress whom O’Neill
took as his third wife, and who revived his reputation after his
tragic death in 1953.
