The publication of this volume was the beginning of O'Neill's relationship with Boni and Liveright. The firm, which was to publish O'Neill until its bankruptcy in 1933, was founded in 1917 by Albert Boni and Horace Liveright. It became Horace Liveright, Inc. several years later when, after constant quarrels, the partners tossed a coin to decide who would buy out whom, and Boni lost. In addition to publishing O'Neill, the company gained stature as the publisher of such previously unheralded writers as Hemingway, Faulkner, T. S. Eliot, and Robinson Jeffers. O'Neill received an advance royalty of $125 along with ten per cent of the proceeds from the sale of the book. |
