O'Neill used "mental asides" in STRANGE INTERLUDE to reveal the concealed thoughts of the protagonists. For the original production, the physical action of the play stopped while the asides were spoken. During rehearsals O'Neill complained, "If the actors weren't so dumb, they wouldn't need asides; they'd be able to express the meaning without them." |
