Bennett Cerf, a former vice-president of Liveright's, purchased the Modern Library from the firm in 1925. A short time later, in partnership with Donald S. Klopfer, Cerf founded Random House. Random House became O'Neill's publisher when Liveright declared bankruptcy in 1933.
