Anxious to avoid errors in his treatment of Catholicism in DAYS WITHOUT END, O'Neill had Robert Sisk, now a movie executive, send a copy of the play to Martin Quigley, a publisher of film magazines and a power in Catholic circles. After hearing from Quigley, O'Neill replied, "I am delighted that your reaction was so favorable -- particularly so since the script you read is much too long and wordy and lacks the compact finish I hope to get...by the time the play is produced." However, when the play opened in New York on January 7, 1934, the reviews, for the most part, were unfavorable.
